Development of Village is essential to National Building
Mumbai, 26 August 2019, (S.E.C.M.): It is essential to
strengthen and promote governance at village-level for facilitating development
of democracy through a bottom-up approach. These local self-governments (LSGs)
are supreme institutions and important to the process of Nation Building, said
Shri. Ch. Vidyasagar Rao, Hon’ble Governor of Maharashtra, at the release of
Coffee Table Book on ‘25 Years of State Election Commission Maharashtra’.
In the presence were Shri. J.S. Saharia, State Election
Commissioner, Maharashtra, Shri. B. Venugopal Reddy, Principal Secretary of
Governor of Maharashtra, Shri. K.V. Kurundkar, Secretary, State Election
Commission, Maharashtra (SECM) and Shri. Ranjit Kumar, Dy. Secretary to
Governor of Maharashtra.
Shri. Ch. Vidyasagar Rao expressed that in continuation
of SECM’s role of promoting knowledge and its dissemination of LSGs and its
elections, thought should be provided to publishing articles, columns, etc.
across platforms to promote grassroots democracy and throw light on its role in
the development and growth of our nation.
The State Election Commission, Maharashtra, has been able
to undertake various electoral reforms and innovative practices to make
elections to local bodies in Maharashtra free, fair and transparent, said Shri.
J.S. Saharia. He added that the State Election Commission, Maharashtra, has
been able to successfully perform its constitutional responsibilities with the
positive cooperation of Government of Maharashtra, and through cooperation and
linkages amongst various stakeholders in India and internationally.
